How to travel

zoner Check in and out

With a Rejsekort, you must begin all journeys by checking in through a check-in card reader. If you change the means of transportation during your journey, you must remember to check in again.

At the end of your journey, you must check out through a check-out card reader. When you check out, you will also be charged for your journey. On the card reader screen, you can see the price of the journey and the balance on your Rejsekort. If you are eligible for a discount, it will automatically be deducted from the price of the journey.

Use a check-in extra card reader or Rejsekort Vending Machine
You can always check in fellow travellers through the check-in extra card readers that you will find at stations. Place your card on the blue point until you see an “OK” on the screen and hear a two-toned sound. You have now checked in.

You can check in and out through the Rejsekort Vending Machines that are placed at all DSB, Metro, and Arriva stations, as well as most light rail stations. Place your card on the blue point and follow the instructions on the screen.

Place the card on the blue point, until you hear a two-toned sound and see an “OK” on the screen.

When you check in, you will also see a “God rejse” notification. When you check out, you will see the price of the journey and the balance of your card.

Remember to listen to the sound signal and to read the text on the screen to make sure that you have checked in or out correctly.

The card reader will alert you
If something is wrong, the card reader will let you know. If you are moving your card too quickly past the blue point, the screen will say ”Reading error, try again”, and you will hear an error sound. Place the card on the blue point until it is read correctly.

The card reader will also let you know if the balance on your card is too low to check in, if your card has expired, etc.

With the Rejsekort Vending Machines, not only can you check in and out, but you can also access several of the services of our online Self Service.

Place your card on the blue point and follow the instructions on the screen.

You will find a Rejsekort Vending Machine in many stations:

DSB stations

S-tog stations

Metro stations

GoCollective stations

NT Customer Service

Skagen stations

Hirtshals stations

Aarhus Rutebilstation

Aarhus Letbane stations

You can check in fellow travellers on a Rejsekort Personal, Rejsekort with commuter area, Rejsekort Flex, Rejsekort Corporate and Rejsekort Anonymous.

Activate the extra feature by pressing the keys on the card reader. Follow the instructions on the screen to check in the group of travellers. You can both add and remove customer types, such as if you only want to add a bike to a Rejsekort Flex.

Guide: How to check in additional travelers.

If you need to change the means of transportation during your journey, just check in as normal. The group setting will be cancelled when checking out.

Please note:

  • There must be enough money on the card to cover the prepayment for the group.
  • Everybody in the group will get a time discount if you check in within the discounted time periods and within a regional fare sector.
  • Your fellow travellers will not get or earn a quantity discount.
  • Young persons and pensioners can only be checked in under the “Adult” customer type.

You travel alone again if you check out

The option to travel as a group is momentary and is removed when you check out. That means that you start a new journey, when you check in after having checked out with a group, or if you start a new journey alone and bring new travellers along later during the journey. Therefore, it is especially important as a group, that you only check ind, when changing transportation and continuing your journey - otherwise the card will assume you are travelling alone once more.

If you are only checking yourself in

The check-in extra card reader can also be used to just check yourself in: Place your card on the blue point until you see an “OK” on the screen and hear a two-toned sound (as with a regular card reader).

Don’t check in free travelers

Adults can bring two children under the age of 12 with them for free. Children can bring one other child under the age of 12 with them for free. You shouldn’t check in fellow travelers, that travel for free, on your Rejsekort.

It is important to remember to check in again when changing the means of transportation during your journey, nomatter what transportation you use. The changes may affect the price of your journey.

If you do not check in when changing, you may risk getting a control fee.

Problems with checking in
If all the card readers and vending machines in the area are out of order, you must buy a ticket before you can begin your journey.

You are welcome to call Rejsekort Customer Service at 70 11 33 33 to report the problem.

Problems with checking out
If you are trying to check out but the card reader is out of order, you must use another card reader or a Rejsekort vending machine. If all the card readers and Rejsekort Vending Machines in the area are out of order, you can register a check-out by using the 'Check Udvej' app.

Inform the app that you were unable to check out and pay for your journey.

→ Go to 'Check Udvej' app.

There is no charge if you check out at the same place that you checked in—and remember to do so within 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, you will be charged the minimum price of a journey, which in most parts of the country will equal two zones.

If you forget to check out, you will normally be charged the prepayment of your journey.

You can end your journey and pay for it—and, at the same time, lower the risk of having your card blocked—if you use the Check Udvej app. Unfortunately, you cannot use the Check Udvej app if you travel with a Rejsekort Anonymous.

→ Find out more about the Check Udvej app here.

→ Go to register a check-out here.

Repeatedly forgetting to check out
If you forget to check out on a number of occasions within a  12-month period, Rejsekort A/S may block your card.

If Rejsekort A/S blocks your card, you will also become registered in our customer register and will not be able to buy a Rejsekort Personal or a Rejsekort Flex within the next 12 months.

With a Rejsekort Anonymous, you risk having your card blocked if you forget to check out twice. You must contact Rejsekort Customer Service to request a form so that you can have the remaining balance paid out.

Payment for journeys without check-outs
If you do not register a check-out for a journey, and we are able to document that the journey costs more than the prepayment charged at the beginning of the journey, you will be charged an amount covering the part of the journey that exceeds the prepayment.

The amount will be deducted from the balance on your Rejsekort. The price of the journey will be based on the first check-in, the last check-in, or the last fare inspection during the journey.

You may get on or off a bus between two stop points that are located in two different zones. If you get off a bus between stop points in what is called "a waving stretch", your Rejsekort will count the end zone backwards (the stop point that is located right before the place at which you got on). If you get off between stop points, your Rejsekort will count the start zone towards to the next stop point.

As waving stretches almost only exist in country zones, this will only affect a few bus lines. If you get on a bus in a waving stretch, you can agree with the driver to check in when the bus enters the next zone. In the same manner, you can check out when the bus leaves the stop point prior to the place at which you want to get off.

If you are having problems with calculating the price of a journey in a waving stretch, please call Rejsekort Customer Service at 70 11 33 33.

tankop Top up your card

To be able to travel, you must have money on your card. The balance of the card must, at a minimum, cover the prepayment of your next journey.

You must top up with at least DKK 100, and your balance must not exceed DKK 2,200.

Top up well in advance of the trip
Please note that you will need to use your Rejsekort or put it in a Rejsekort Vending Machine for the amount to be transferred:

If you are going by train or use a Rejsekort Vending Machine, you can transfer the amount to your card at the earliest 5 hours after booking.
If you are going by bus, you can transfer the amount to your card at the earliest 24 hours after booking.
You will need to use your travel card or use a Rejsekort Vending Machine within 30 days to transfer the amount, otherwise your order will be canceled.

If you need to top up your card immediately, you can always top up at a Rejsekort Vending Machine or at a retailer.

At our Self Service you can see which orders are awaiting transferred to your Rejsekort.

If you set up a top-up agreement, money will automatically be transferred from your payment card each time the balance on your Rejsekort reaches a set minimum.

You can also set up an agreement for others—e.g. your children, so that the family will always be ready to travel by bus, train, or metro.

If you are on the go and need to top up your Rejsekort, you can do so through Rejsekort Vending Machines at stations. You can also top up at Rejsekort retailers.

→ Find Rejsekort reatialer here.

faktura Prepayment

When you begin your journey and check in, a prepayment will be deducted from your Rejsekort. To be able to travel, the balance on your Rejsekort must at least cover the prepayment of the journey. If the balance on your Rejsekort is too low to cover the prepayment, you cannot check in before you have topped up your card.

The prepayment is deducted the first time that you check in on a journey, but not if you change the means of transportation during your journey.

The prepayment is deducted from the price of the journey
When you check out at the end of your journey, the prepayment will be set off against the price of the journey, and the difference will either be reimbursed or charged to the balance on your Rejsekort.

With a Rejsekort Personal, you prepay 25 kr. for an “Adult” customer type, whereas a “Child” will prepay 12.50 kr.

With a Rejsekort Anonymous, an “Adult” customer type will prepay 70 kr. for a regional journey and 600 kr. for a journey between regions, whereas a “Child” will prepay 35 kr. on a regional journey and 300 kr. for a journey between regions. You have to personally upgrade your Rejsekort Anonymous at a Rejsekort Vendingmachine or by the help of a Bus Driver.

Travelling between the regions means:

  • Travelling across Storebælt and Lillebælt
  • Travelling between Sydtrafiks, Midttrafiks and Nordjyllands Trafikselskabs regions.

If you travel for more than what is covered by the prepayment, the difference will be deducted from the balance on your Rejsekort when you end the journey and check out.

The journey costs more than the balance on your Rejsekort
If the balance on your Rejsekort is not enough to cover the price of the journey, you will get a notification that the balance is low when you check out.

If you do not have a top-up agreement, you must top up your card as quickly as possible so that the balance is high enough for you to keep travelling.

If you have a top-up agreement, your Rejsekort will be topped up automatically.

historik Journey duration

If you check in and out again in the same zone within 30 minutes, Rejsekort will register this as a continued journey. The two journeys will therefore be charged as one when you check out.

The number of zones in which you travel is correlated with the time of your journey. Each zone translates to a certain number of minutes. If your journey lasts longer than the minutes of the zones, the price of the journey will be based on the duration of the journey.

An example
A journey in three zones on Zealand must not last longer than 1.5 hours. The price of a zone is added for each 15 minutes that go over the journey's 1.5 hours. For example, if a journey takes two hours and 10 minutes, you will end up paying for six zones (the three zones in which you have travelled plus an additional three zones for each 15 minutes longer than the 1.5 hours).

→ See the correlation between time and zones here.

If you travel on Zealand or within a regional fare sector in Jutland, you must check out no later than five hours after your journey began. On journeys between fare sectors in Jutland and on Funen, you have 8 hours to check out. If you travel across Storebælt, you must check out within 12 hours. If you travel to Malmø from Zealand, you have five hours; and from Jutland, you have 12 hours to check out.

If the maximum time is exceeded
If you do not check out in time and your maximum time has been exceeded, you must register a check-out through the Check Udvej app no later than 21 days after the journey. You can also use the web application. Unfortunately, you cannot use the Check Out app if you travel with a Rejsekort Anonymous.

→ Go to Check Udvej (Web application).

→ Go to Check Udvej app.

hand 2 Fare inspections

Fare inspectors will send information from your card to the Rejsekort system of where and when the inspection took place. This information is used to calculate the price of a journey if you forgot to check out.

The fare inspectors can request to see verification that you are eligible to travel with a certain Rejsekort or as the customer type that the card is adjusted to. Consequently, you must be able to present an ID if requested.
